When parents think about ‘teaching and learning’ for a young child, we normally think about children being taught how to read, write, and count. Often times we forget that there are other skills and knowledge that are very much foundational and must be practiced alongside academic skills. These are the life skills necessary for children to grow into lifelong learners who are creative, critical, independent, and competent problem solvers. We cannot predict what challenges the children will face in the future, and so the best preparation we can give them is to train them to learn and think for themselves.
The EYFS framework includes an essential element called “Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning”. There are three Characteristics which are all interconnected:
- Playing and exploring – Children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go’.
- Active learning – Children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and enjoy achievements.
- Creating and thinking critically – Children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things.
Playing and exploring involve a great deal of important skills. Children learn to observe, engage curiosity, use senses to explore the world around them, and pursue particular interests. During pretend play, they develop creativity and make sense of their experiences. Playing and exploring also allow them to initiate activities, seek challenge, and take risk. Because of the nature of play, children can practice to ‘have a go’ and learn by trial and error. When children see playing and exploring as a way of learning, they are more likely to develop into learners for life.
Children experience active learning when they are engaged in what they are doing and feel motivated to do more. They will be able to get more involved, maintain focus longer, and pay attention to details. When faced with challenges, they are more likely to persist and keep on trying, and enjoy the satisfaction of their accomplishments. It’s not about getting an extrinsic reward like stickers or treats, but it’s about knowing that not giving up but persevere to overcome a challenge is worthwhile. Active learning trains children in the vital skills of persistence and resilience.
Creating and thinking critically means helping children to have and test their own ideas. As they make links and notice patterns, they’ll get better at making predictions, strategies, and decisions. Critical thinking sounds like a grown-up skill, but it is actually cultivated from a very young age. Having the right experiences support children to develop ideas and logic.
